Best Protective Packaging by Industry

Choosing the right protective packaging can oftentimes make or break your business operations. Minimising shipment damage rates, improving throughput, and complying with increasingly strict legal sustainability frameworks are some of the reasons why decision-makers pay careful attention to the choice of protective packaging.

The solution to this intricate challenge that many organisations face depends on the industry, client expectations, and business objectives. Based on Pregis’ number of successful customer stories that come from different B2B and B2C industries, this blog post outlines several solutions with examples that can help you decide what kind of inside-the-box protection will help you achieve your goals.

E-Commerce

As one of the fastest-growing industries in the post-pandemic world, e-commerce underwent profound growth in the last few years. Web shops are progressively replacing in-store shopping as customers are looking for more convenient options to save time and effortlessly compare retailers. As such, goods are now being delivered directly to the customer’s doorstep, and the unboxing experience plays a significant role in the overall impression of a brand.

The challenges Pregis’ customers faced were mostly related to improving sustainability by switching to more environmentally friendly packaging material. Reducing damage rates with the goal of improving customer satisfaction bolstered by impactful online reviews was another challenge. Finally, as the number of shipments in B2C is higher than in B2B industries, it is important for e-commerce employers to optimise ergonomics for the employees working in warehouses.

Air solutions with integrations proved to be most suitable for these challenges. For example, our customer Galaxus’ challenges ticked all the boxes above, which is why they opted for a comprehensive solution of 24 packing stations, with 12 AirSpeed® MINI PAK’R V3 top fill machines filling the Renew™ Zero air cushions. Another customer looking to switch to more sustainable consumables was Mirka. Similarly, Mirka chose the AirSpeed MINI PAK'R V3 machine in combination with the environmentally friendly Renew air cushions. The result in both cases was a remarkable success, with tangible reductions in CO2 emissions, as well as material usage reductions and minimised damage rates.

Spare Parts

Automotive and many other industries relying on machinery are dependent on the availability of spare parts. Without access to spare parts, automotive and aerospace manufacturers are risking not only productivity loss but also reduced lifespan of products that need replacements. According to a Grand View Research report, the demand for spare parts is steadily increasing, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.0% from 2023 to 2030.

With this growth comes the key challenge for Pregis’ customers, which is scaling packing operations to meet increased demand for spare parts. Another challenge is maintaining top-tier protection of heavy but delicate machinery that is being shipped out. On top of that, noise reduction at pack stations was another pain point that Pregis’ team was tasked with.

For both Jumo and 50 Factory, these challenges were efficiently addressed with a comprehensive paper solution. Jumo opted for the Easypack® Packmaster Pro combined with the 2-ply 70/52 GSM paper rolls supplying pack stations via an air ducting system. 50 Factory chose a slightly different solution – two Easypack Packmaster Pro Fanfold machines with 1-ply 70 GSM fanfold paper supplying five bins via two air ducting systems. Thanks to the customised solutions by Pregis, Jumo and 50 Factory increased productivity and achieved greater customer satisfaction while improving ergonomics on-site by reducing noise.

Third Party Logistics (3PL)

Also known as order fulfilment, 3PL works closely with e-commerce and similar customer-facing industries to help them outsource logistical operations. 3PL might help with any aspects of business including, but not limited to, warehousing of goods, supply chain management, and order processing. As such, 3PL businesses play a key role in nurturing the dynamic relationship between the retailer and the customer.

Satisfying both retailers’ and customers’ needs puts pressure on 3PL decision-makers to introduce high-quality sustainable protective packaging that end-users will appreciate while reducing costs for the retailer. The challenge becomes even more multifaceted when considering working with different retailers that have a variety of customers with different expectations.

Pregis customer WSSN encountered the challenge of needing various types of protective packaging to accommodate client needs. They traditionally pack with air, but some customers also wanted the option to pack with paper. They were therefore looking for a solution where their packers had easy access to both air and paper packaging materials. To efficiently solve this challenge, the Pregis team implemented two separate line-ups: one with the Easypack Packmaster Pro Fanfold together with four MINI PAK’R V3 machines, and one with the Easypack Quantum machine for paper void fill along with another two MINI PAK’R V3 machines. The result was a 20% reduction in packaging material usage due to having more suitable consumables for every product. Furthermore, the packaging process got more efficient as the packers had different packaging materials at their fingertips.
