Pregis is now PolyCert Europe Certified!

The Pregis facility in Heerlen, Netherlands received the PolyCert certification in conformance with the QA-CER standard. This supports the recycled content claims for the AirSpeed® Renew™ and Renew Zero materials. As a part of the Pregis air portfolio, this product line includes a wide range of sustainable protective packaging consumables suitable for a variety of applications. 

Testing Sustainability  

PolyCert as a platform comprises several independent institutions from different countries. Each body provides a strict and independent assessment of the recycled plastic content. “Our environmental claims about the Renew line are now fully verified” - says Collin Pustjens, Quality Supervisor for Pregis Europe. “This means our customers can be confident when we say that our entire process from purchasing through production to eventual dispatch complies with sustainability standards, such as ISO 14021. “ 

With this certification, Pregis adds another achievement towards our 2K30 goals. As Renew products produced in Europe contain a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, it was important to obtain a third-party certification in order to prepare for the tightening EU legislation concerning plastic recycling. “A good example is the plastic tax in Spain” - denotes Collin. “Following the EU directive on non-recycled plastic, countries must choose how to reduce the impact of plastic on the environment. Spain has introduced a so-called plastic tax, imposing a rate of €0.45 per kilogram of non-recycled plastic.” Since the Renew line has a minimum of 30% PCR content, this would alleviate the tax burden of EU member states in addition to reducing the environmental impact of plastic. 

Strict Criteria 

“We are especially proud of our Renew Zero portfolio, which is carbon neutral from cradle to gate according to a company-performed LCA and made from 50% plant-based waste on top of containing 50% PCR content” - says Collin, adding, “There was a strict audit inspecting the words describing our products with the intent of avoiding greenwashing. It was thoroughly checked to confirm the use of terms like PCR and recycled were substantiated.” With the PolyCert certification, Pregis confirmed its leading position in providing sustainable solutions to customers across industries, from e-commerce to third-party logistics.
